The essay was about so many things, but in simplest terms it was about Hong’s experience with the English Language as an Asian American. Her essay dives into serious issues like racial/ethnic identity, mother tongue and assimilation. For example, when she was a child she thought accent, linguistic and grammatically correct was the key of being considered normal in the Unted States. But, overtime, she came to the realization that the linguistic convention and standard of English was set by someone. And that someone is the Anglo Saxon Protestant community. So being too proper and loyal to the English language made her abide rules and regulation set by different communities. Ultimately, he had an epiphany that having a broken English meant to be loyal to her community. (Classroom Forum response)

Willie Jordan, an experienced Instructor teaches Black English in SUNY Stony Brook. In her essay, “Nobody Means More to Me Than You” claims that Black English is normal and has standards like White English. Jordan supports her claim by showing the rules, norms and conventions that exist in Black English that gives itself an entirely different standard. For Example Jordan made her students read “The color purple” which was largely written in Black English and won the Pulitzer prize which gave Black English enough recognition and legitimacy to be considered a standard for English.

“language discrimination” in united statesIt was very helpful because of the way it is written. The quotations put enough restrictions to enhance specificity and the rest was flexible to get a variety of results. Some articles and source the exact words like “language discrimination” which led to specific sources that were in my interest. Language AND identityIt is an interesting one. Both words are very broad and represent a wide spectrum of things, to make thing concise AND was very useful.

It was an essay sample in the beginning of the class. We were learning how to introduce and paraphrase sources in our own words.

Rajan, who is a professor in colonial history wrote a peer-reviewed journal titled, “The Impact of British Rule in India,” published by Saga Publications in 1969, claims that the forceful integration of the English language with the Indian education system led to an unhappy physiological outcome. He clarifies that, “It created an urban elite in all walks of life which, by its knowledge and use of English,was cut off socially and intellectually from the millions of rural Indians” (95).
